With such a successful movie under their belts, you’d think that Sony and Marvel will look to fast-track Tom Holland’s next MCU film, but this isn’t the case. In an earlier report, Amy Pascal hinted that more Spider-Man MCU films are coming starring Tom Holland, among other matters. Mind you, this statement from the Sony producer was before No Way Home started breaking box office records left and right. Now, Tom Holland has gone on record with EW to confirm that a fourth Spider-Man movie in the MCU is not officially in the works. Holland specifically points out that they’ve only had conversations, for now, hinting that there’s no formal commitment between all parties involved yet. While this could be Holland’s attempt to try and take attention away from his fourth Spider-Man outing in the MCU, you have to remember that Holland is no longer under contract. Spider-Man: No Way Home was a game-changer that raised the bar for whatever comes after it. The way that the film ended warrants a grounded and more narrative-driven story that would stand in stark contrast to Holland’s previous Spider-Man films. The potential to create a powerful next chapter for Holland in the MCU is there, but it’s much easier said than done. It makes sense for Sony and Marvel to take their time weaving an emotional story that won’t crumble under the weight and pressure of coming after the record-setting No Way Home. Of course, as much as we’d love to see Holland reprise his breakout role, it won’t be a while before that happens, even if Marvel and Sony finalized their plans right now. The MCU’s slate for this year and next year are full already, with the wheels for 2024’s MCU movies presumably in motion. If we’re lucky, we might see Holland’s Spider-Man return in the next Avenger-level film. But, as far as Spider-Man’s next solo MCU adventures are concerned, don’t expect to see Spider-Man 4 until at least 2025 if not later. One thing is for sure though - the MCU will have to think about giving Holland a proper send-off in the MCU. He once mentioned that he wouldn’t want to keep on playing Spider-Man well onto his 30s. At 25 years old, the MCU has at least 5 years left to set up a “successor” for Holland in the MCU, which many believe is Miles Morales. If it’s any consolation, Spider-Man fans won’t exactly be left wanting for more. Sony recently confirmed details about the first half of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which will premiere on October 7, 2022. Meanwhile, Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will come out in 2023. In addition, a third Venom film is coming. Finally, there’s enough fan interest in a fourth Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire and the third one with Andrew Garfield.
