The Thunderbolts team is a mixed bag of super soldiers, anti-heroes, and sleazy government types. The super soldiers in the lineup are Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier, U.S. Agent John Walker, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, and Task Master. The team also has anti-heroes in Ghost and Songbird while the U.S. government is represented by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and General Ross. With a team composed of mentally unstable individuals, who needs a villain, right? Well, there are reports that the villain of the Thunderbolts movie will be much more powerful than the entire team combined. The super soldier called Sentry is rumored to be the antagonist of the upcoming Marvel movie.
Who is Sentry?
Sentry’s real name is Robert “Bob” Reynolds, a middle-aged degenerate who broke into a secret lab and ingested a gold liquid that he assumed was drugs. The serum turns out to be a refined version of the Super-Soldier Serum that gave Steve Rogers his Captain America power. This more potent version of the Super-Soldier Serum is said to have the power of “a thousand exploding suns” making Sentry one of the mightiest characters in the MCU. The limits of Sentry’s powers have not yet been explored in the comic books. Sentry has superhuman strength and speed and is capable of flight. He is also one of the most capable telepaths on the planet. He can also heal himself and others faster than Deadpool and Wolverine can regenerate their bodies. Sentry is so powerful that he fought World War Hulk and Galactus to a standstill in separate instances. Nick Fury has stated that S.H.I.E.L.D. has not found a way to kill Sentry while Iron Man has not found a weakness in the anti-hero. However, being this powerful has its drawbacks. Prior to becoming Sentry, Bob Reynolds was already mentally unstable due to substance abuse. Ingesting the serum made him even more mentally unstable to the point that he projected an evil version of himself called Void.
Sentry’s role in the Thunderbolts
Sentry will be recruited to join the Thunderbolts presumably by General Ross who is obsessed with the Super-Soldier program. When the team heads off on a mission to recover adamantium from the dead celestial Tiamut, Sentry starts to hear voices and supposedly goes berserk. Sentry going insane may be a manifestation of his evil persona Void. The Thunderbolts will be punching above their weight to try and stop Marvel’s equivalent of Superman. Ryan Gosling is rumored to be in talks about the role of Sentry. Another name being mentioned is that of actor Alexander Skarsgård. The Thunderbolts movie may be a setup for a solo outing for Sentry down the line. These are all rumors and speculations at this point and take them with a grain of salt. The Thunderbolts is scheduled to begin filming by mid-2023 and there can be changes to the script. The Thunderbolts is coming to theaters on July 26, 2024.
