For the series’ 20th anniversary celebration, the two people that brought the tough and cynical undercover DEA agent to video game life decided to pay tribute.

Max Payne celebrates its 20th birthday

While most gamers will probably remember Max Payne as being a Rockstar game, the franchise was actually birthed by Remedy Entertainment. Yes, we are talking about the same Remedy Entertainment that made Control and Alan Wake. Back then, Remedy Entertainment was taking a big risk by releasing a completely unknown third-person shooter. Fast forward to today and the series is widely remembered as one of the most influential action games of the 2000s. In celebration of Max Payne’s 20th anniversary, Remedy Entertainment brought together the face of Max Payne, Sam Lake, who now works as the Creative Director over at Remedy Entertainment, as well as his voice, James McCaffery. You can watch the video below:

Happy anniversary to everyone at Remedy, @RockstarGames, @3DRealms, and to all of you who love the game. Let’s celebrate using the hashtag #MaxPayne20! pic.twitter.com/8PYua4D8HI — Remedy Entertainment (@remedygames) July 23, 2021 As you can see from the video above, the reunion closes with Lake, the model for Max Payne, wearing the protagonist’s signature leather jack as McCaffery talks about birthdays in a way that only Max Payne ever could. Just in case you want to partake in the celebration yourself, the entire Max Payne trilogy should be available for a discounted price on Steam. You can also watch the video game based on the movie, which stars Mark Wahlberg as the titular character. Although it wasn’t good enough to make it to our list of the best video game movies, it’s a passable action film that made a modest $85.8 million at the box office on a $35 million budget. As for a sequel or a new entry to the series, we wouldn’t bet on it. The original makers, Remedy Entertainment, no longer owns the rights to the series. Meanwhile, Rockstar Games is busy working on GTA 6 and GTA Online. Then again, who knows? Studios have revived less popular games in recent years. If not in video game form, then maybe Netflix might consider adding Max Payne to its long list of upcoming video game series set to release on the streaming platform.
