It’s only been a couple of months since Activision Blizzard released Sledgehammer Games’ Call of Duty: Vanguard. Not to mention, there’ve been rumblings these past couple of months that the publisher might finally stop releasing a new Call of Duty game every year. But, while this is something that the controversial publisher could do soon under new management, it appears that it’s not happening this year. As per Infinity Ward’s official Twitter account, “a new generation of Call of Duty is coming soon.” What is perhaps the most telling part of this announcement is the line, “stay frosty.” It’s a phrase commonly associated with Captain “Soap” MacTavish from Infinity’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series. In doing so, Infinity might have just confirmed that this year’s Call of Duty game is a sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot.

In particular, the game’s confusing name and that it will have a single-player campaign focused on taking down drug cartels in Latin America, among others. Of course, Infinity’s Tweet doesn’t confirm these leaks outright, but the tease using Soap’s line is telling. To date, 2019’s Modern Warfare is the best-selling Call of Duty game ever. It only makes sense that Activision Blizzard went back to a proven formula and studio, especially after Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Vanguard saw a significant dip in sales. If nothing else, this could be Activision Blizzard’s final hurrah before Microsoft’s acquisition becomes final sometime in 2023. For now, all fans can do is wait for Activision Blizzard and Infinity Ward to reveal more of this year’s Call of Duty game. Since things have normalized somewhat, we can expect Infinity Ward to reveal Call of Duty 2022 in May, just like its predecessors outside of last year’s Vanguard. Until then, expect Activision and Infinity to start dropping hints and building hype. Coincidentally, Infinity’s latest tease comes just a short time after reports of a Call of Duty: Warzone sequel coming in 2023. Since the original Warzone was part of 2019’s Modern Warfare, we might hear more about Warzone 2 once Call of Duty 2022 is here. Further proof lies in a recent Business Wire report claiming that Infinity Ward is leading the “development on this year’s premium and Warzone experiences.”
