The studio made the announcement via a blog post published to commemorate the game’s 20th year anniversary. Here’s what general manager, Roman Hladík, had to say: The Mafia game series is set in fictionalized versions of American cities from the 1930s in the first game to the 1960s in the most recent installment. It has an open-world design and focuses on realism. Furthermore, the Mafia games are critical darlings with good sales. But, the studio did not offer any more detail about the upcoming new Mafia game. The last new Mafia title, Mafia III, came out in 2016. 2K games also came out with a remake in 2020, Mafia: Definitive Edition. To celebrate the series’ two decades of existence, 2K Games is making a digital version of the original Mafia available on Steam for free between September 1 and 5. Prior to this announcement, an earlier report claims that Hangar 13 was working on a Mafia prequel set in Italy. It’s unclear if Hangar 13’s upcoming title is the same project that leaked earlier this year. The latest Mafia announcement comes as a much-needed win for Hangar 13 after it had to lay off dozens of staff members, see its studio head resign, and a project worth $50 million get pulled. Most likely, Mafia IV or whatever it ends up being called is part of Take-Two Interactive’s massive release pipeline through 2025, presumably as one of the 24 upcoming “Immersive Core” projects.
