Embracer Group made waves when it bought Eidos Montreal, Crystal Dynamics, and Square Enix Montreal, at a massive discount earlier this year. Because of this, fans wondered if the new management will let the aforementioned studios work on some of its older games. In particular, Eidos Montreal and Deus Ex. The latest installment in the fan-favorite and critically-claimed RPG games came out all the way back in 2016. Unfortunately, despite earning several awards and nominations, Square Enix wasn’t too happy with how Deus Ex performed commercially. Coincidentally, this was also the case for Eidos Montreal’s most recent project, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. It was a part of the list of nominees for last year’s Game of The Year award. However, Square Enix still thought the game didn’t meet expectations. Having said that, the latest word from the grapevine is that Eidos Montreal wants to outdo Cyberpunk 2077 with the next Deus Ex. Grubb couldn’t quite confirm when this will happen, but this does reflect a change in priorities under new management. Specifically, Grubb said that “there was no possibility of that conversation to even begin under Square Enix” when talking about an ambitious Deus Ex game. We understand why Grubb’s statement will send Deus Ex fans into a frenzy. Unfortunately, fellow insider, Jason Schreier, had to spoil the fun. In a ResetEra thread discussing Grubb’s revelations, Schreier mentioned that “the game furthest in development at Eidos Montreal right now is a new IP.” But, Schreier did mention that Embracer Group has shown an interest in greenlighting a new Deus Ex game by Eidos Montreal. TLDR; Eidos Montreal could work on a new Deus Ex game under Eidos Montreal, but don’t expect that to happen anytime soon. As for Square Enix, it appears that the Japanese company isn’t done selling off parts of the company yet. The most recent report suggests that Square Enix wants to sell stakes in its remaining studios. This info comes after Eidos Montreal’s founder, Stephane D’Astous, said in an interview that Square Enix might be preparing for a Sony acquisition. Meanwhile, fans will get a chance to watch the Cyberpunk 2077 anime spinoff, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, later this year.
