Ranked, competitive or e-sports modes, whatever you want to call them, give the battles that players engage in with one another a more rigid, contest-style structure. These modes usually serve as the backbone for any kind of official tournaments that are organized around a given game, and are the basis of e-sports matches as well. Ranked games also usually produce a lot more toxicity and, uh, salt than ‘casual’ modes, but that’s besides the point.

Ripple Effect Studios Senior Design Director Justin Wiebe spoke about the team’s current lack of plans for any kind of ranked mode being present in Battlefield 2042, or possibly at all. Wiebe did say that the team is interested in “community feedback” - but don’t expect this to mean that a ranked mode will be added if enough fans ask for it. That simply may not be the direction that the developers want to take Battlefield 2042, and widespread support for a ranked mode might only bear fruit when the next title in the series comes around. Battlefield 2042 takes the series back to a modern setting, painting a bleak picture of the near future where the world faces a resource crisis and the collapse of many governments, setting up an entirely new and spectacularly volatile political climate. The USA and Russia remain the last two superpowers, and engage in a second cold war with the use of “no-pat” mercenaries. The hype for what may be the year’s biggest shooter is definitely here, with players so eager for modern-day Battlefield content that they caused the older Battlefield 4’s population to skyrocket.
